Job Description

The Missouri School of Journalism is seeking an assistant professional practice professor with a vision for guiding the next generation of advertising/public relations professionals at the world’s top-ranked journalism school.

If you’re an innovative, experienced strategic communicator who is equally comfortable in the digital, social and traditional worlds of advertising/public relations, we’re offering an opportunity to put all of your talents to work in our Strategic Communication program.

The ideal applicant should have industry experience with work on campaigns as well as an understanding of what strategic communication is about today. No previous teaching experience necessary. We’re looking for someone who has helped grow or been a key member of organizations (agency, nonprofit, corporate, etc.), with a track record of creating and elevating content. This person should also be skilled as a mentor and understand how to connect with diverse and talented students.

In your teaching role, you’ll be responsible for teaching four classes each semester (4 fall/4 spring). The classes taught would vary based on the expertise of the individual, but among the foundational core classes we offer the person selected would teach some combination of the following:

J2200 Audiences & Persuasion
J4200 Principles of Strategic Communication
J4204 Introduction to Strategic Writing and Design
J4970 Strategic Campaigns

Additionally, this individual would teach some electives (based on expertise) such as:

J4208 Strategic Writing II
J4220 Creative Portfolio
J4270 Public Relations Writing

This 9-month faculty position is benefit-eligible, renewable and carries the academic rank of Assistant Professional Practice Professor (non-tenure track). The individual also serves in a leadership role in our Strategic Communication capstone. The anticipated start date for the position is August 2024, but could also be as early as January 2024.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications for the position are:

At least 5 years experience working professionally in advertising/PR.
A bachelor’s degree.

Candidates will also be evaluated on:

A proven track record of excellence (e.g., awards, signature achievements).
A deep, applied understanding of how to use traditional and digital skills to enhance storytelling for a campaign.
The ethical judgment and skill to teach young people how to make tough calls in the modern environment of dealing with diverse audiences.
Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills are a must.
