Position Summary
The Art Director will shape and, ultimately, define Advancement’s visual look and presentation across digital and print communications in collaboration with University Advancement (UA) partners and in accordance with Washington University’s visual branding guidelines. As a member of Advancement Communications (AdComm) team, the Art Director will provide support on projects in all areas of design within the purview of the group, including future fundraising campaigns and branding.

They will concept, design, art direct, and produce (from start to finish) a range of print and digital communications that clearly and consistently articulate the brand and align with results-oriented marketing strategies. This individual will also find creative, design-oriented solutions to communications challenges. They may be called upon to present visual solutions to campus partners and communicate strategies behind design ideas and executions. The ability to adeptly manage feedback from multiple stakeholders, while also maintaining and communicating a strong creative vision, is critical.

Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities

– Creative Concepting, Art Direction, Graphic Design, and Production: Serve as responsible for the independent creation of key communications projects and solving UA branding challenges through the development and implementation of original graphic design layouts, as well as the development of UA design standards and templates. Create original editorial design, brochures, publications, marketing and fundraising collateral, and electronic communications in support of University advancement priorities.
– Talent and Resource Development: Participate in collaborative planning with the AdComm team in order to develop effective and timely delivery of high-quality creative services to a diverse set of UA partners within a highly decentralized structure. Stay on top of the creative marketplace to ensure work is consistent with or exceeds industry standard.
– Partner Support: Work with UA/campus partners to develop strategic recommendations for communications design, through meetings, interview assessments of goals, and presentations. Mentor AdComm and UA staff. Help implement approved design templates. Collaborate with UA staff to assist on other projects as assigned.
– Systems and Processes: Participate in the development of the team’s project management, workflow, and tracking processes, as well as the evolution of the team’s technological needs in collaboration with the Director of Digital Strategy.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications
– Master’s degree in fine arts.
– Related experience in print and digital design.
– Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite, specifically InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator, along with a working knowledge of graphic design for web, mobile, email marketing, and video.
– Experience working within a creative services agency and/or higher education marketing communications.
– Experience in designing components of large-scale innovative and integrated creative initiatives on behalf of clients.
– Creative, service-oriented, self-driven individual with a no-problem attitude and a keen attention to detail.
– Outstanding graphic design sensibilities, project management skills and a proven track record of success in a highly collaborative, team-oriented environment.
– Experience in developing visual brands and brand standards that work in a variety of media.
– Experience in developing and integrating creative concepts across all media types, including print, digital, video, photography, and environmental.
– Familiarity with printing specifications and working with vendors for offset, digital, and large-format printing.
– Ability to problem-solve and find multiple design solutions under narrow parameters and budget constraints.
– Ability to work quickly and efficiently, juggle multiple projects with competing deadlines.
– Ability to give and receive constructive feedback in a professional manner.
– Ability to effectively communicate original ideas. Solid presentation, listening, and communication skills.
– Proficient with presentation software, specifically PowerPoint and Keynote.

Required Qualifications
– Bachelor’s degree.
– Five years of related experience.
